Jacob Daniels

Reinhard Alumni Postdoctoral Fellow
Time of Stay
2022-2023

Jacob Daniels just earned his History Ph.D. at Stanford. As the Reinhard Alumni postdoctoral fellow, he will conduct research that builds on his dissertation titled Borderland Central: Edirne and its Jewish Community from the Late Ottoman Empire to the Early Turkish Republic. Located in Turkey at the border with Greece and Bulgaria, the city of Edirne and its environs had, for centuries, been home to a large, vibrant community of Ladino-speaking Jews. Jacob's work examines how this community survived the violent fall of the Ottoman Empire only to find the Turkish borderland untenable by the 1930s. Jacob looks forward to returning to Stanford as a lecturer, offering three Jewish history courses in 2023-24.
