Nesi Altaras is a PhD student in Jewish history focused on the Ottoman Empire. In previous projects he explored Jewish memory of the Ottoman-Iranian borderland and the politics of citizenship through the example of the Sephardic restitution laws of Portugal and Spain. 

He holds an MA in Political Science at McGill University and a BA in International Relations and Economics from Tufts University. Originally from Istanbul, his work as a journalist and translator has been published in English, Turkish, and Ladino. He has been an editor of Avlaremoz, a news and opinion website focused on Jewish affairs and antisemitism in Turkey. He has also been active in projects to strengthen contemporary Ladino (Djudeo-Spanish).
