"Dual and Dueling Citizenship: Jewish identity and self-perception in contemporary sources during the Balkan Wars of 1912-13” considers how Balkan Jews self-identified during a period of war and questioned loyalties. The paper examines contemporaneous primary sources to better understand how Jews viewed themselves and their position in the Ottoman Empire amidst widespread conflict and a refugee crisis. It argues that the competing efforts of Balkan Jews evident in sources — to both assimilate into the greater Ottoman citizenry and maintain their own distinct communities and identity — were above all varied means of survival and self-preservation.
