In Memoriam: Elizabeth Bernhardt

The Taube Center for Jewish Studies sends its deepest condolences to those grieving the loss of Professor Elizabeth Bernhardt, Professor of German Studies and Director of the Language Center. The Stanford community knows Professor Bernhardt as a pillar in language education. Her leadership and vision transformed the Center into an exemplary institution for the study of languages.
We at Jewish Studies remember Elizabeth Bernhardt as a friend of the Center and a valued member of our community. We hold deep appreciation and gratitude for her unwavering support of the study of Jewish languages. She worked closely with many of our Directors on hiring, training, and retaining instructors. She helped us adapt our Jewish Language programs to the evolving needs of our undergraduate and graduate students, all while ensuring they maintained the academic excellence she championed within the Language Center.
On a more personal note, it is hard for me to think of Stanford without Elizabeth there. She had been a colleague and a friend for over 24 years. May she rest in peace. May her memory be a blessing.
