Rokhl Oyerbakh (1903–1970), author, journalist and translator, known for her work in the legendary Ringelblum Archive and later at Yad Vashem, was Itzik Manger’s life-companion in Warsaw (1933–1938).  Manger traveled to the Polish metropolis for the first time in late 1928, he soon made the city his chosen home, and was deported from there in the spring of 1938.  Looking back in the 50s, Manger reflected that Warsaw was his “true home”. Manger’s sense of belonging to and being at home in Warsaw was significantly due to his living and working with Rokhl Oyerbakh, his great love and important  intellectual interlocutor and assistant in his major literary projects.  However, after their acrimonious separation in 1945, Manger didn’t acknowledge her part in his life. Oyerbakh, too, remained silent on the matter.  The talk presents a reconstruction of the companionship and its role in Mangers creative process.
