We Want to Understand the World in Order to Rebuild It: Yiddish Scholarship During and After the Holocaust
As early as 1940 the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research set out to bring news of the unfolding European tragedy to an American audience. As the scope of the destruction became clear, YIVO became a pioneer of Holocaust scholarship and of commemorating the losses of Jewish Eastern Europe. At the same time, the institute remained true to its mission of addressing contemporary problems its new American home.
